Demy Papathanasiou
Demy Papathanasiou worked for many years as a mechanical engineer. In her forties, she began to train in dance. She is now an esteemed choreographer and led one of the Europe Beyond Access artist laboratories in Athens.
Her work has: deconstructed meanings of the ‘crutch’ and what it can mean to different people; explored how isolation affects disabled people; and challenged hidden normative structures in choreography.
Her recent immersive performance for Theatre enCorps Collectif, ‘You Walk…’, is inspired by Laurie Anderson’s lyrics “You walk…and you don’t always notice it, but you’re constantly falling”. This piece poses the question: how can we construct a space for diverse bodies to be made present and visible, with agency and participation in contemporary society?
