Date: October 22, 2021 - October 22, 2021
Location: France
IETM (International network for contemporary performing arts) are organising their 40th anniversary Plenary Meeting in Lyon and online on 21-24 October 2021. As part of its programme and collaboration with Europe Beyond Access, we will be holding an on-site session at Maison de la Danse to present some of the initial findings of our Time to Act report, a major new study spanning 40 European countries into the barriers that disabled people experience when accessing the arts, with a particular focus on programming works by disabled artists in Europe.
Our report demonstrated that 52% of European performing arts professionals rate their knowledge of work by disabled artists as either poor or very poor, and that 87% of European venues and festivals don’t involve disabled people in selection panels or in the commissioning process.
With this in mind, our on-site session at IETM Lyon 2021 will focus on the following: how can we address these questions and act at the level of programmers, venues but also companies and collectives? How can the level of knowledge of disabled artists’ works be increased and nurtured? How do we ensure that experiences and learnings of small and independent companies, venues and festivals are considered and recognised? And how do we move beyond ticking the box of ‘disability’ in one’s funding application and towards a cultural ecosystem that is genuinely more equitable, inclusive and diverse in its cultural programming?
