Dalibor Šandor is a Serbian learning-disabled performer and director who works with Europe Beyond Access partner Per.Art, an independent inclusive performing arts organisation based in Novi Sad, Serbia.
Invited to join Per.Art at a moment of crisis in his life, Dalibor has been a member of the group for over ten years and has also taken part in Europe Beyond Access artist laboratories in Hamburg and Malmö. He is co-creator of We Are Not Monsters, a powerful theatre piece commissioned by Europe Beyond Access, which he developed working in close artistic collaboration with internationally acclaimed French choreographer Xavier Le Roy, dramaturg Marcel Bugiel and a team of creatives. The piece challenges the preconceived stereotypes and prejudices around disability that lead to the marginalisation, discrimination and social exclusion of disabled people.
In this short film, Dalibor recounts the story of how he came to be a member of Per.Art and describes his first impressions. He talks about his work, his love of performing in front of an audience and what prompted him to name his theatre piece ‘We Are Not Monsters’. He also explains why he feels it’s important to meet and interact with disabled artists from other parts of the world, and shares what he hopes to achieve in the future.
This film is part of a series introducing the artists participating in the artistic exchanges, public performances and commissions, and capacity building activities developed as part of Europe Beyond Access.
